In the unlimited set, the fourth CD has the Mental Ray sattelite program. Install this on any computer you want to use for rendering (except master), depending on the number of licenses you have. Now create a simple textfile called maya.rayhosts and in that textfile add the computer names (or IP adresses) of your these computers. Now place this file in the /mydocuments/maya/7.0/prefs/ folder on your Master system (the one running maya) and place it in the root folder (c:\) of all the other ones. Make sure you have no firewall blocking the ports used on any of those machines (If I remember correctly the default port is 7005, but I could be wrong). Now when you start Maya and choose Mental Ray for rendering, set the translation setting to progress messages (to check if it's working), and render the scene; if done correctly it should now use all the machines specified in the maya.rayhosts file. Easy right?

It's also on a 4th CD with Complete (7 at least).

Default port is 7003.

What they can't help you with is making sure that your machines can talk to each other, so be sure that if you're using a local "firewall" on your machine, that you allow communication through the ports mentioned in the online help system. Do a search for "7003" and "7103" and you'll see all that.

on the slave machines under os X where would this file need to be placed?

also how should the formatting for the rayhost file be?

IP address - port #

for example like this
111.111.111.11 : 7103

or like this
111.111.111.11:7103

thanks

for anyone interested I figured out the rayhost file configuration is

111.111.111.11:7103

and I do not need to put a rayhost file on the satelite computer

and basically another issue about net rendering on OS X is the adjusting the port #'s which you can change in your services file. for me the default values did not work I had to manually add the mi-ray line and change the port number. once I did that everything worked fine. Hu-Rah!

I have several machines that would need maya installed. Is it good to install the Stand Alone version of MentalRay side by side? Ideally I would like to have one "Master" and the rest as development machines by day, by night they turn over to render machines.

Thanks,
