Any file (jpg Targa avi etc) i try to render i get the Runtime error.
I am new to Maya 2008.
the file size is 50 MB, textures only are 40 MB.
Any suggestions?

sounds like you are running out of memory, please give system specs, maya version and renderer you are trying to use.

I Hope you're not running pentium III with 256MB of RAM
so,
Go to control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual memory
Change the paging file size with custom size.
Initial Size about 2048 and Maximum about 4092.
Sometime it helps with large scenes & textures.
