Okay, specs first:
AMD K-6 533 mhz / 384 mb of RAM / GeForce2 MX 32mb dual monitor card with Detonator 4 series drivers
I first experienced this problem after upgrading to Windows 2000 . . . shortly after starting 3ds Max, I encounter a blue screen (rarely) or my computer completely reboots itself (frequently). I am able to run 3ds Max by itself, but as soon as I open Internet Explorer 6, everything crashes. I do not know if it's the specific combination between IE6 and 3dsMax4 (which I just upgraded to 4.2, but that hasn't helped), or if other programs would cause a similar problem - I just know that I can't, more or less, run 3ds max at all. I haven't attempted to work in 3ds with nothing else running to see if it will continue to remain stable, as I've already lost a significant amount of work from the first crash (corrupted a file).
Does anyone know what this might be? I should point out that I never encountered this problem with Windows ME or 98, and it began when I was using a crappy TridentBlade video card (proprietary Compaq card) . . . I thought the new card would help, but . . . no luck so far.
Thanks in advance,

I had the same prob when my AVP antivirus was enabled
If you have it, disable it before to use 3dsmax...

Win2k has its share of problems, the service packs 1 and 2 might help you fix this. Download service packs 1 and 2 from Microsoft and install. as always backup anything you dont want to lose when trying to fix the OS. good luck.

Do you have norton anti-virus installed? If you do, then disable auto-protect. Just rightclick on the norton icon in the system tray, and disable autop-protect. It's a bug with Norton and 3ds Max. Anytime you browse through the network, or use IE while 3DSMAX is running, it will crash.
It took me several painful days to figure this out. I've talked to several other people who had the same problem and disabling Norton Auto-protect cured everything. Win2k is rock stable now as it should be. You'd think Norton would patch this since 3dsmax is a widely used tool.
