Hiya

What is the cause - & if possible, the solution, to the annoying occurence at startup while loading plugins. I get this dialogue box that says "Class from has duplicate class ID: not loading. This may be due to a duplicate plug-in path."

I get this only for the freeware plugins I have installed. I don't really mind the annoyance, except when I do a network batch render & I have to ok every time 3dsmax loads another scene, which defeats the object of leaving a batch render unattended.

Any ideas?

This is most likely due to the PLUGIN.INI file in your 3dsmax4 root having a path listed twice. If you open the plugin.ini (it will come up in Notepad), you'll see a header [Directories]. Beneath it are a number of paths. Try to find two that are
pointing to the same subfolder in max and delete one of them. That should fix that error.

Hope this helps,

Carl

This message typically comes up when two different plug-ins share the same name when they're loaded. The names of the files may be different, but they name themselves the same in Max. I remember some freeware Edit-mesh modifier doing that, and I think there are some Blur plug-ins that will do it if you don't follow the install instructions.

For the past several years I've been using Plug-in Manager to modify my plug-in.ini at startup. To use it effectively you need to organize all your plug-ins into separate folders, but it's really worth it, and it can help you figure out what plug-ins are causing problems.

Hi Carl & Geoff

thanks for the info! I have checked my plugin.ini & there are no duplicate paths listed. I will try the plugin manager to see what gives. I already do seperate my plugs into different folders, typically by creator (eg Blur, Peter Watje, etc) in an attempt to avoid any conflict, but it seems to make no difference whatsoever. I have also tried to put them in a folder outside the maxroot, but the same issues still arise.

I'm inclined to agree with Geoff's reasoning that the plugins are named the same internally, as the path seems to make no difference.

many thanks once again

Basically this means that there are plugins trying to load that have the same ClassID. 99% of the time this is because there is a duplicate plugin trying to be loaded. Sure, your plugin paths may be correct, but double check to make sure you don't have the same plugin (DLL file) in more than one path.

Hi BrandonD

thanks a stack for the info - much appreciated! I'm usually pretty good at reading manuals & instructions & things, but I get to re-install max so often that I often just forget or am too lazy to double check the procedures for the myriad little plugs that get thrown into the mix! The two that I was receiveing errors from were replacements for max standard plugins under different names, so I didi not notice the indescrepancy until I read the readme.

From now on, my motto to myself is RTFM!

tnaks again
