Everyone, I just want to know do Max 4 really stable? I installed Max 4, and it occasionally crashes even when I'm just doing simple tasks.
My computer is PIII 850, 64 MB Geforce2, 256 MB RAM, 20&30 GB HD.
Does Max 3 more stable than Max 4?
Thank you.
Hi, guys...What's up?
What OS do you use?
MAX runs only fine on Win2K or NT4
Also try SZB-Mode. Maybe it`s a OGL-Driver problem
Download the latest Patches. (Max4.2.6 ist the latest)

yeh ive often thought that 4 is more unstable that 3, maybe it is a win2k issue but still, that doesnt solve the problem.
ive had more, what i like to call, maya errors (unexplicible behaviour) than any other version of max.
but i still love it.

Well, when I used win 98 (because when I tried to install it on my NT4 service pack 4, it said that it won't work on NT). Well, now I have moved to other company, and they use Win 2k and Me. Can it be installed in Me?

3DS Max has pretty much always been an NT kernel product, although it has been known to run on the Win9x systems (just not as good). Obviously you are best off following what the software recommends and use WinNT 4 or Win2000.
If you are still having troubles with your copy of Max after disabling your Norton AV software you can also try...
- Update your motherboard chipset drivers (espeically if you have one of those notoriously aweful VIA chipsets)
- Update drivers and patches for all of your hardware components and your OS
- Update your system BIOS
- Check to make sure that your system isn't overheating (50C or less is good)
- Check to make sure that you have enough free drive space on your swap drive
- Run a Ram diagnostic program to check and see if its a proplem with your memory
Those are but a few suggestions that you can try out. If you are still having troubles I recommend that you talk to Discreet or the guy you bought it from and find out suggestions from them (since you bought the software from them they are more than willing to help). You can also make a post on the Discreet Max Forums (in the Hardware section), make sure that you post every little detail about your computer down to the driver versions of your hardware (the more detail the more suggestions that the better).

dont use ME ! !
Use Win2000sp2 or NT4 sp5 or sp6
why not Win98?
Because Nt2000 and Nt4 take the usage of ram much better!
and its more stable then 98,atleast in my book.
cheers!

In general, you should stick to the NT kernel OSs. Max was written for them, and not for the 98 line of products. 98 wasn't even an OS really, it was just a UI running on dos.
I also had pretty constant crashes, even blue-screens once in a while. Since a blue-screen made me suspect that it was hardware related issue, I started taking the machine to its parts. It turned out to be a video-card issue. I use max now in software z-buffer mode (till I have an other card). No crashes since.

I don't think its a Win2k or a WinNT issue. I run Windows 98se and Max 4 and I haven't had a problem todate. WindowsME is no good tho, not nearly as stable as 98se. I was running it for awhile and was having nothing but problems.
