3Dsmax's extrude function dosen't allow extrusion along certain axis's, so I assume that the shape's pivot has sothing to do with it so I modified it and still got the same result please help. Thanks

If you are talking about the extrude tool in the Editable Mesh or Editable Poly shapes/modifiers then you are incorrect in your assesment on how it works.

When you extrude, the direction that the extrusion goes in is based on the average of the face normals that you have selected.

I hope that this helps, if it doesn't please reply and let the board know exactly what you are doing and using.

I was actually refering to the extrude functions throughtout 3dsmax because I first tried extruding through face extrude and then tried creating a shape and got the same result, the extrude went straight up.

So my problem is can the normals be altered so I can extrude along the x axis??

You can rotate the object to put the face so that you can extrude along x or you can use the viewport align tool, goto the the correct viewport, set it, and then do your extrude
